Our Mission

Wellspring promotes the recovery of persons with mental illness through leadership in the development of quality housing and rehabilitation services.

An Agency Overview

Wellspring promotes mental health recovery for adults with severe and persistent mental illness by providing quality housing and rehabilitative services for nearly 600 clients annually. As a private, non-profit agency, Wellspring operates two Crisis Stabilization services, two Transitional Housing programs, three Supported Housing programs and deeply subsidized rental housing throughout Jefferson County and a Shelby County site. Wellspring is the only agency in this region that provides independent housing coupled with psychiatric rehabilitative services to those challenged by mental illness.

In our housing: We provide high quality, well-constructed housing that assures our clients opportunities for community integration and enhances our neighborhoods.

History

Wellspring was founded by a small band of community leaders, mental health professionals and parents who joined together to address the need for supportive housing for adults with severe and persistent psychiatric illnesses.

The agency began in 1982 by opening a 15-bed transitional residential program, using only privately raised funds.  Over time, support from the Kentucky Department of Mental Health and other public funding sources was secured and private fundraising also increased. However, the demand from clients, their family members, mental health professionals and community leaders for Wellspring’s supportive housing steadily grew. In response, Wellspring continued its growth, and today offers a variety of supported housing options designed to provide a “best practices” approach to mental health recovery through 19 diverse sites.

As a result of Wellspring’s unflagging efforts and commitment to our proven model of service, the agency is considered Kentucky’s pioneer and lead provider of housing and supportive services for adults with severe and persistent mental illness.

In Our Community:

We are committed to transparency through excellence in program practices and outcomes, and excellence in employment and financial management. All aspects of the agency’s operations are overseen by our volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of community leaders, mental health professionals and concerned family members.
