EMPOWERING ADULTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS
TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY AND INDEPENDENCE
“Wellspring works. My son Sam who died recently was not readmitted to the psychiatric hospital in the last 20 years of his life. He told me that Wellspring was his home.”

The untimely death from cancer of my son Sam, age 46, prompts me to talk further about his journey of recovery from mental illness. Our family has always been direct about Sam’s psychiatric illness and about its catastrophic nature. However, in recent years, I have become even more aware of and marveled at his strength of dignity and independence.
I thank Wellspring for providing Sam with a home, friendships, and a caring supportive community. I credit Wellspring staff for much of his progress in functioning effectively and experiencing the satisfaction of a meaningful quality of life.
Prior to moving into Ardery House in March of 1982, Sam had been hospitalized on eight occasions over the preceding six years, averaging five months each time. In 1986, Wellspring opened Broadway House and Sam was the pioneer resident, living there for 18 years. Most studies cite an 85% reduction in hospital readmission rate for patients who move into supportive environments like Wellspring. It works. In the time he was first treated at Wellspring Ardery House and through his residency at Broadway House, Sam had not been hospitalized.
There is no one summary comment that I can give about the life of my first son, but I do I thank Sam for involving me in his courageous journey through illness and into recovery.
