ART MEETS ACTIVISM

Kentucky Foundation for Women’s
Art Meets Activism Program

Pat Sturtzel

In fulfillment of a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women’s Art Meets Activism program, Wellspring has joined with guest artist Pat Sturtzel to provide a dynamic fabric arts project to residents of Journey House, a transitional housing program for women dealing with the compounded stressors of homelessness, co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, and, often, the emotional burdens associated with significant trauma and abuse.

marking fabricThe overall goal for this project is to improve the self-esteem and sense of personal empowerment felt by these women to look beyond the trauma and chaos of the past, to see themselves as whole, healthy, and capable of learning new skills. The creative process, as well as the art product itself, has served to provide our clients with a voice for safely speaking about their lives: past, present, & future.

Following are art pieces being made in the workshop.
