Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Partnership

Wellspring was able to partner with Esperanza Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program and provide EAP to eight clients from Ardery, Broadway, and Concord programs. EAP is an experiential therapy that uses interactive activities in place of traditional therapy sessions where people “talk” and a therapist “listens”. Esperanza uses the unique connection between horses and humans to facilitate experiential learning and growth for clients. Margaret LaRocca, CSW, Esperanza Director and Nicole Linton, MSSW Graduate Student, Ardery House Assistant Program Coordinator facilitated the sessions. The opportunity for Wellspring clients to participate was made possible by Mr. and Mrs. Jack and Donna Mullins. Mr. and Mrs. Mullins also generously provided funding again for the spring, and the Journey House women are currently attending EAP sessions at Esperanza. Research Endeavor
Nicole Linton, MSSW Graduate Student, Ardery House Assistant Program Coordinator conducted research on the efficacy of using Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) with adults with a severe and persistent mental illness. A pilot study was conducted using EAP with eight Wellspring clients. Measurements were taken to determine if EAP could help with self-esteem, self-efficacy, depression and anxiety. Clinically significant results were found with 100% of clients reporting less depression, and 75% of clients reporting less anxiety, improved self-esteem, and improved self-efficacy. The results from this research study were presented by Nicole at the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) 8th Annual Conference in Ogden, Utah this past March. For further information regarding this study, please contact Nicole Linton at lintonn@wellspring-house.org
