Wellspring Announces Housing First Program

In September, the Homeless Coalition walked the streets of Louisville Metro and surveyed homeless people as part of the “100,000 Homes Campaign.”  The results were startling; a large number of the participants reported major health risks, and the average length of homelessness was five years.

But on September 23rd the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced a grant award that will address those issues for at least 75 adults in our community.

Everyone needs a home. Having a place to stow our stuff and call our own is fundamental and something most of us take for granted.  Unfortunately, that is not always the case for many among us who live with mental illness.

The latest edition of the Choices in Recovery newsletter profiled Wellspring's community support specialist, Eric Cecil.  The article tells part of Eric's story of recovering from a mental illness and how he now works to help others find solutions to help them along their journey to recovery.  Eric is also a published poet, and the newsletter features some of his poetry. Click here to read the article (found on pages 10 - 13) and Eric's poetry (page 23).

Surely, you have not forgotten that October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink is the signature color of the cause and still widely displayed around town in the form of the recognizable pink ribbon logos. Celebrating strengths has become the model for many groups' efforts, including those that work to improve the lives of people with severe and persistent mental illnesses, and their color - red - is on the rise.

Wellspring Wallopalooza Golf Marathon is a Success!

The first ever Wellspring Wallopalooza Golf Marathon was a great success!  On October 17th, 34 golfers spent a beautiful Monday enjoying the greens at Woodhaven Country Club—all while raising funds for recovery!

The golfers pledged to play 100 holes of golf that day and solicited donations to Wellspring for every hole played.  The players stayed well-nourished throughout the day with coffee from Heine Brothers Coffee, a delicious breakfast from Zoë’s Kitchen, lunch from Chick-fil-A , and snacks provided by a supporter of Humana’s Account Installation Volunteer Network.
