Wellspring Tonini Apartments Named one of Preservation Louisville's Top 10!

Wellspring Tonini Apartments has been named one of Preservation Louisville's Top 10 Preservation Successes!  This recognition acknowledges preservation projects that have "successfully rehabilitated and returned a building to productive use."  The Top 10 Preservation Successes and Top 10 Most Endangered Historic Places lists were announced during a press conference at The Big Four Bridge, which was also named one of the Top 10 Successes this year.

Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, has been shown to decrease stress, anxiety, and depression and increase self-esteem in medically fragile practitioners.  Jeff Randall, a Clinician at Wellspring’s David J.  Block CSU, wanted to see CSU clients have an opportunity to try Tai Chi, and to document the results of participation. Thanks to a grant supported by the Community Foundation of Louisville, Jeff was able to make that idea a reality.

Meet Dr. Rif S. El-Mallakh

Dr. Rif S. El-Mallakh, Professor and Director of the Mood Disorders Research Program at the U of L School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, has joined the Wellspring Board of Directors. 
 
For the last 20 years Rif has focused his research on the pathophysiology of bipolar illness.  He has published over 190 peer reviewed papers, has been funded by NARSAD, NIMH, and the pharmaceutical industry, has served as reviewer for both NIMH and the Canadian Research Council, as well as reviewer for several

An historic landmark, the 1890s era Tonini Church Supply building on Shelby Street stood vacant for many years.  With its brick exterior crumbling, and the inside deteriorating, the Phoenix Hill Neighborhood 
Association feared the structure would have to be torn down. 
 
“But life is being restored to this old building, and it will soon play a vital role in the community again by providing twelve new attractive, affordable apartments for  members of our community who live with mental illness and have meager incomes,” explains Wellspring Executive Director, Kathy Dobbins.

There has been an outcry across many circles in response to the Sequestration Order, issued on March 1st.  This unprecedented action cancelled approximately $85 billion in budgetary resources across the Federal government until the end of the current Federal fiscal year on September 30th.  

From parks, to home delivered meals for the elderly, to schools and even Thunder Over Louisville, the impact is being felt throughout our community.

For 35 years, The WLKY Spirit of Louisville Foundation’s Bell Awards have provided a means to recognize individuals who have demonstrated the true “spirit of Louisville” through selfless volunteer efforts and inspire all residents to engage in community service. We at Wellspring applaud Bernie Block as a recipient of the 2012 Bell Award; Bernie is a testament to the fact that one person’s voice can make a difference.

Twenty years after the Tonini Church Supply company moved to St. Matthews from Phoenix Hill, work has started on a $2.5 million project to convert the company’s original historic buildings on South Shelby Street to apartments.

A new building also will be constructed next door to create 12 apartments in all for chronically mentally ill clients of Wellspring social service agency, which has created community housing at nearly 20 other sites, too.
